Multimode fiber is a type of optical fiber used for optical communication and optical transmission. Unlike single-mode fiber, multimode fiber allows multiple rays of light to travel along the central axis of the fiber at different angles. As a result, optical signals in multimode fibers can propagate in a variety of light modes, each corresponding to a different propagation path and transmission characteristics.

Multimode fibers typically have low bandwidth and are susceptible to dispersion and attenuation over long distances, limiting their use in high-speed data transmission and long-distance communications.

Short-range communication:

Multimode fiber is often used for short-distance communication, such as LAN connections in data centers, enterprise networks, and local area networks (LANs), communication between computers, etc.

Q: What is multi-mode fiber?

Multi-mode cable features a core diameter of 50 to 62.5 microns. Multi-mode fiber is most often used to transmit voice-data-video signals in short-to-intermediate-distance applications, such as within a building, or building to building applications.

Q: What wavelengths are used with multi-mode fiber?

A: Multi-mode fiber is used to transmit wavelengths of 850 nm or 1300 nm. Fibers that transmit at 850nm and 1300nm are used most often because low-cost, semiconductor light sources and photodetectors that transmit and receive these wavelengths are inexpensive.

Q: When should I use multi-mode fiber instead of single-mode?

A: Use multi-mode fiber to transmit signals for hundreds of meters or thousands of feet. It's ideal for transmitting signals between floors of a building or from an equipment room to a wide variety of rooms and spaces. It is not appropriate for long haul links - that's where single-mode fiber excels.

Q: Can single-mode and multimode fiber be used in the same system?

A: You use both single-mode and multi-mode fiber if you're using a switching system that supports both fiber types. However, you must connect a single-mode fiber to a single-mode port and connect multi-mode fiber to a multi-mode port.
Connecting single-mode fiber directly to multi-mode fiber is not feasible - the difference in core sizes introduces significant signal loss.

Q: What type of multi-mode fiber should I use for new installations?

A: Use OM3 or OM4 multi-mode fiber for new installations. Doing so provides a future-proof installation to handle future/higher data rates.

Q: OM3 vs OM4 What is the difference?

A: OM3 and OM4 are both 50/125 core fiber, but they have different internal constructions. OM4 fiber provides the same performance as OM3 but over longer distances. This is due to the higher bandwidth of OM4, which is 4700 megahertz compared to 2500 megahertz for OM3. The increased bandwidth of OM4 allows for longer transmission distances. When deciding on the type of fiber and fiber accessories to use, it is important to consider the distance of the fiber run.

Q: What can OM5 do to cover my bandwidth needs?

A: OM5 cabling was designed to improve data center performance and address bandwidth challenges. It is optimized for short division multiplexing and can support at least four wavelengths in the 850-950nm range. This allows for efficient implementation of SWDM (Shortwave Wavelength Division Multiplexing) applications, which reduce the number of parallel fibers needed by a factor of four. As a result, only two fibers are required to transmit data at speeds of 40 Gb/s and 100 Gb/s, and reduced fiber counts for higher speeds.

A: Single mode means that the fiber can propagate one type of light pattern at a time. Whereas, multimode means that the fiber can propagate multiple modes. The difference between single-mode fiber and multimode fiber is mainly in the fiber core diameter, wavelength, light source, and bandwidth.
When deciding between single mode and multimode cables, the first factor to consider is the fiber distance you actually need. For example, in data centers, multimode fiber optic cables are sufficient for shorter distances. In applications that require distances of several kilometers, single-mode fiber is the best choice. In applications where single mode and multimode fibers can be used, other factors such as cost and future upgrade requirements should be considered.
